We’ve talked a great deal here about design (5000 or so comments) but we’ve talked less about the individuals behind the design. You can meet the finalists here, and some of the other participants here. This prize is about the people who’ve made OLP a fun place to be the past two months, and helped us reach our goal of getting so many great designs into the final. Those that have helped promoting and supporting the contest (like t-shirt talk) and you guys who’ve been submitting and commenting, particularly the latter in this case.

One of the successes of this OLP for me has been the bringing together of professional and amateur designers, in one contest without the elitism you can sometimes see in other contests. As you’re all at various levels of design experience its great to see those with more knowledge helping other designers with advice. So who should we reward with a whole years worth of shirts for their contribution to the community of la Fraise?

Some suggestions:

Jebs - a regular commenter, reviewer and advice giver (top commenter for this month)

Japasa/Nelson/Mootsie/Legofish - For not taking things too seriously, and for entertaining and playing around like Superheroes, Moustache and Eyebrow Man, Mood for Adam, Pirate Label heads as well as submitting serious entries.

Pascalphilly - the most active submitter and commenter, I don’t think anyone has spent more time on the OLP since it started.

Azzaoui - Supportive and quick to give advice to others.

Laurent - For submitting consistently different and great designs that made us think and might have pushed other designers into new directions.

Shirtnerd - A personal pick, interesting comments that usually make me laugh/smile.

The list could go on and on (AlexanderWende, Jeffersonb etc etc). Who would be your pick?

However you found a way to contribute to the OLP, thanks! If we could give this prize to you all we would (we’re trying to line something up, give us a bit more time to see if we can pull it off)

Nelson for the superheroes series. He didn’t get shortlisted for it, but he did it anyways. Thats commitment.

It’s really hard to pick just one. I would go with Pascal for all his involvement, or Laurent for the the sheer number of his great quality submissions.

I’m for Japasa, Nelson and Laurent..and Jebs!

    Hmmm…why only one ? :)))
It’s hard to decide………..my vote goes for thise 4 :

    Azzaoui, Pascalphilly, Japasa and AlexanderWende…

    Good luck people :)

I would choose nelson and japasa. ;)

  6. 6 by Laurent | Oct 25th, 2007 at 9:57 am

Jebs, for his comments, of course !!!

One year of LaFraise’s T-shirts for one person is a very very very very nice gift.
But, one quarter for four persons is a very nice gift too :-) cause more than one person deserve to win a price for his contribution to OLP.

I agree very much with adam’s suggestions but it is really very hard to pick one because there are different reasons who should win this la fraise price… :) ok, my picks:
    - azzaoui by great support
    - pascalphilly for his stamina from begin to end
    - mootsie by very popular moustache which is legend now
    - nelson: funny cartoons

I think the winner will be very angry that this one has to buy a very very big wardrobe for one year shirts. ;) It would be better to divide a ‘cake’.

    wow!

    i feel greatly honoured.

even though it’s somewhat paradoxical to assign a community prize to a single person, i would not reject it if it was awarded to me :)

in terms of entertainment value i would nominate my special friend P.S. …
of course the line between being entertaining and annoying is very thin, but i hope none of us crossed this line too often ;)

the overall community spirit was really very positive. although the disappointment with not being “the chosen one” sometimes showed through in the end, most people took it with grace, and if someone gets too nasty, open source history can teach us how to cope with it :D

in terms of comments, i have to agree with notorious P.S. that there seems to be some kind of “elite” of grafik-design professionals, that are patting each others backs. this is not because they are inherently evil or arrogant, but it’s an emergent property due to a general principle that i observed in my own commenting behaviour:
i mostly commented on designs that i liked, but also because i hoped the designers who’s opinion i appreciate would become interested in my own contributions and leave some feedback.

if everyone acts upon this principle, the comments are likely to form some kind of scale-free network, with a few very popular designs and a long tail of designs, which may bear a lot of potential, but don’t receive a single comment. this kind of hugs and pats is the the monetary unit that platforms like youtube are running on. if you are not up high in the food chain you might simply give up or end up like P.S. and me desperately promoting your own designs ;)

the problem with this kind of wealth-distribution is that a lot of potential might just get lost below the poverty line. in economic theory this problem is alleviated by redistribution of wealth via taxes. it would have been fantastic if spreadshirt had provided for a way to reward people who were ‘giving charity’ by commenting on designs that were not so popular (yet).
if the community prize were to be something like a mother-theresa prize the quotient of ‘comments distributed’ by ‘comments received’ would be an excellent measure …

even though this may amount to shameless selfpromotion, I’d suggest to rather assign the laFraise-award to some terrible amateur who has tried to stir the community and its conception of what ‘your-own-label’ is all about, than to some graphic-design guru that shared his well-meaning advice.

actually i am really proud to be one of the first nominees who is not a professional graphic designer or even a freelancer. when looking at the grand finalists, i couldn’t help getting the impression that being a pro was somehow a prerequisite for winning a prize. this notion was cemented by the confusing question: “how did you get into graphic design?”.
my answer would be: “I never did, I am a professional amateur. that’s what qualifies me for a crowdsourcing project like OLP.” :D

    vote for pedro :)

Any (or some) of mentioned above should be fine, including P.S. :-)

  10. 10 by Pascalphilly | Oct 25th, 2007 at 12:04 pm

Thanks guys for your suggestion. I think everyone mentioned above would deserve it.

  11. 11 by shirtnerd | Oct 25th, 2007 at 12:30 pm

I agree with you guys! maybe dividing the cake is not such a bad idea :D

on the other hand, one hundred shirts would make a very nice initial capital for my next generation spreadshirt-based top secret startup-thing.
i would neither keep nor sell the shirts, but transform them into something completely different … its like shirt 2.0 i (where ‘i’ is the imaginary component) … shirts taken to an other dimension … i am really exited about this, but at the same time I very much like the idea of sharing the cake …

this shirt-sharing approach would underline the commons charcter of OLP and at the same time constitute a symbolic act of insurmountable grandeur, especially since it came from, and was supported by the very community itsself :D

  12. 12 by ikou | Oct 25th, 2007 at 2:01 pm

if i resume : quotient of ‘comments distributed’ by ‘comments received’ multiplied by ‘number of unpopular(o comments) entries’ would be an excellent measure. yes yes, close to zero but positive im not so bad : cut the cake!

  13. 13 by shirtnerd | Oct 25th, 2007 at 3:03 pm

yeah :D forget about IQ and EQ, its all about CQ :)

Although it does not understand post by problems of translation, goes my commentary in Spanish! HahaHAHAhahaha!

    Thanks and good luck?

First I would like to thank the people who did not find themselves too Grand to comment my lousy ideas. Second, I would like to give special thanks to Shirtnerd because even his comments DO cross the line of many things (desency, productivity, good spirit…) he have PROVED that he is much, MUCH more IMAGINATIVE than all others… Even he didn’t succeed to realise his ideas graphicaly he have something that only the best designers have… mighty and anormous imagination. Therefor even if he isn’t the graphic designer he made so many key remarks contrary to many proffesionals who where reserved with their simple comments.

So if I have to nominate one here it will deffinately be Shirtnerd even he was crossing the line many times… Even such I found him more productive than majority…

Also I have to admit that I wasn’t aware that this project gives so much attention to comments of the participators… I think that for finding the best ideas for this SS-YOL task open kind of posting solutions is productive, actually very… But seriously considering comments and even using them in the process of choosing the best is not so good idea. In my case for example, I said that I am not interested in comments, people or any kind of social life here… I though that communication of such kind wont be needed because I believe that work talk for itself, and I thought that this was mainly about those graphic solutions. Anyway I can understand the idea of communications of this kind even I can see more bad things than good things on it’s appearance. And that is why I even decided to comment this subject and nominate a person. Even I don’t agree with such ways I will give my support and stay consistent with my contributions.

P.S. My comments came too late to this project… together with my proposals.. (october 15th) But even if I came before I don’t think I would join the ”chit chat crew” because I strongly believe that this kind of taking seriously something that shouldn’t be taken with such importance is not the way to get the best as new visual identity for the Spread Shirt - Your Own Label task.

Pardon my english. I thought it wont be needed here.

  16. 16 by shirtnerd | Oct 25th, 2007 at 7:27 pm

hehehe :)) this is getting more and more funny…
P.S. - my precious - ;) you remind me of my favourite Lord of the Rings character :D when reading your comments I get the feeling that the two of us are somewhat like Frodo and Gollum … if only I knew which was which ;)

but it also feels like we are some kind of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hide, some weird split personality that has invented its other half, to tenderly pat its own back … I even caught myself several times indulging in the fantasy that I just made you up (or vice versa) in order to get some positive feedback at last. but with all decency I must claim, that never I would have been able to invent such a hilarious person as you, not even in my wildest dreams.

I do appreciate your previous comment a lot, not exactly because you have turned into a true admirer over night, but because it provides empirical support for my theoretical model of the patting hierarchy ;)

  17. 17 by P.S. | Oct 25th, 2007 at 8:34 pm

First of all I think that I was the first one who was talking about patting phenomenon here and the chit chat community…
But you did presented your patting model theory which I found true… And that was the drop that have fullfilled the glass and I picked you as mainly someone who makes the good points… no matter to many disagreements that I have with your approach…

I am not your true admirer and I will not deal with you and your special appearance too much even I think you need it quite al lot. Yet as I said many times before, I came here to present my ideas for this new visual identity quest. As I also said in my previous comment you’ve been crossing the line many times… and sometimes for quite a LOT… (Remember your thumb-pennis fantasy instead simple comments of presented work?) … Anyway, the truth is that I found you very imaginative and I really think that your contribution could be stronger than of others… That doesen’t mean that you have done some incredible job here but deffinately worth of grattitude for your imaginative, true, passionate, not premeditated communication…

But don’t cross those lines too much… LOTR and Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are movies… and any resemblance that you can take with your real life could be fatal for your mental health. But on the other side… Genius and lunatic can be the same persone and I will again agree with you.

Take care and let the force be with you… ; )

hi adam, what a surprise! I’m touched to figure in this topic, i acted through the contest like i wanted it to be, friendly, with advices and comments everywhere, to help others improve their logos, to share etc…(i guess i learnt it from Lafraise, commenting there every day lol).

anyway, a lot of persons you nominated could win the prize, and would deserve it ;-)
