Later on i’ll reveal the current top logos that you’ve been voting for. Some of the panelists final picks are coming in now, so i’ll share them from time to time as well. Tomorrow will be ISO50’s, today its the turn of Mit/Aachen Professor and Open Innovation/Crowdsourcing expert Dr Frank Piller.
Here are his picks for 1st, 2nd and 3rd:
Obviously, it was more difficult than ever to pick a design. So I just let my business sense guide my decision to provide an extra input to the real design experts (=the other panel members). And I got my personal trademark attorney sitting next to me to also get her input on the protectability of the designs (for the future trademark protection of the logo).
Ok, here is my list (first, without an order):
Pop your collar! By Netweight
- simple design, but very powerful message
- a typical “why did no one think of this before” idea
- adaptable, can be used with and without words
- and very positive evaluation from the trademark perspective, should be defendable
- downside, however, not really Spreadshirt specific, could work for many fashion labels
LabelHeads by Legofish
- A clear winner, one of the most innovative ideas seen in customization in a long time
- transports perfectly the customization message of Spreadshirt, you should launch it in any case with the logo configurator, and for a premium, allow Spreadshirt customers also to customize their personal Logohead; for top merchandisers, you could create an own logohead (perhaps with a king’s crown)
- And if Spreadshirt needs a serious logo, the stand alone version of the letters without the Labelheads also works well
- My personal trademark attorney is indifferent about the design from a professional point of view, but just LOVES it from a personal point of view
- Downside: what is in ten years? How sustainable is the logo? However, I believe that the language of the Labelheads also will allow for modifications and fun in 11 years …

Think Spreadshirt by Inadimova
- I love the versatility of the design
- Cute, innovative, and very well transporting the general SpreadShirt message
- I see a great opportunity to combine this again with a mini configurator
- My personal trademark attorney has a few concerns (this is why she is a lawyer) but in general approves the design to be defendable (and personally, she finds it gorgeous).
- Downside: Will become the favorite of Japanese’ school girls, but will your large corporate merchandising partners love this, too?
Now, the ranking:
a. ranking - serious regarding the briefing:
1. Pop your collar!
2. Think Spreadshirt_2
3. LabelHeads
b. ranking - w/r to its ability to eyecatch, memorability, uniquness:
1. LabelHeads
2. Think Spreadshirt_2
3. Pop your collar!
There you have it, what do you think of Franks picks? Do you agree or dis-agree with his selections?

totally agree
For open innovation you should give a prize to every opl menbers:). its strange to read “a typical -why did no one think of this before- idea” First, because its not true; secondly because of Dr “open innovation” . Not very coherent, but no others comments about shortlist, this time it was the Franck Piller choice, good luck to all 3.
In this shortlist i think LabelHeads is more in agreement with customization, if its a good criteria for Frank Piller its a good choice for this prize.
100% agree with Frank’s comments. I really love all 3 picks but my personal favourite is definitely LableHeads; Simply because the logo is very eyecatching, unique and will be recognizable for a long time to come.
Too bad that personal trademark attourney have professional oppinion… Otherwise… These nominated would be ABSOLUTELY PERFECT!
They are so inovative! MY GOD why did no one think of these before? They are ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS and we can have so much fun with customizing our own label heads! WOW!
I wouldn’t really pay much attention about other aspects about these creations… I mean… Who care if they don’t describe much the Spread shirt - Your Own Label meaning…
They are so inovative! MY GOD why did no one think of these before? They even can be presented as a “pet food dish, coloured in modern green” And so what if they look more like an illustration than the proper logo! At least the are so FUN and even have all those cute little T-shirts and hair cuts and everything… AAAaaaa… And if you decided to be serious about this need for a new visual identity you can always use the stand alone version of the letters without the Labelhead… I also don’t think that it is much important if they are not so understandable and impressive… There will always be people who just LOVES IT… Even some japanese school girls will find them their favourite cutie-cutie logo… And we all know that they can pick anything as long as they strongly find it interesting enough… And all that with just a simple decision!!! And sometimes…
Simple decision is more than enough…
Good luck~
A bit boring pick i.m.o.
I disagree. For several reasons:
-”I just let my business sense guide my decision”: I thought this price was all about innovation. To reward an idea or concept that made you go, “hey I haven’t seen that tried before.”
-Think Spreadshirt and Pop Collar as great of a logo people think they are, and I can certainly appreciate the design of it, just don’t qualify as innovative since it’s just a think bubble and a shirt collar. These ideas were explored many times and in many different ways throughout OLP and in the case of think bubbles, are very common in the web.
-They’re all grand finalist with at least 2 of them being strong contenders for being in the top 3. How about spreading the wealth?
-IMO Labelheads is the only pick that fits the criteria of innovativeness on this one.
I think the votes are for the general competition and NOT for the innovation awards…
I think, these three logos are okay!
I might be wrong, but from my understanding of Adam’s post Frank is giving his picks for the overall OLP competition, not for his “innovation” panel prize. That explain why he is only picking from the finalists. He will probably announce his innovation prize winner separately. Maybe adam could clarify.
i disagree for the same reason
- business is not a good criteria here
- we are talking creativity ideas and innovation so i don’t think these logos are strong enough for these concept.
- i mean we are talking for innovative logos or preaparing the final choice for winners i thought it was different prcess in my mind no one is specially innovative n this selection but it coulld be a good selection for finding the new logo for spreadshirt that is why they have been choosen :).
innovative ???
why don’t you ask to designers or computer arts :)
i don’ agree with this selection .
Nearby 100% desagree with expert Dr Pillers appreciations. “Pop your collar” has not a positive nor negative message. It’s up to you. It’s an asthray, UFO o pet’s recipient or collar? Dunno. Dr Pillers recognizes not really Spreadshirt specific so I don’t understand why is finalist. “Labelheads” miss up its main “concept” e.g. reproduced at critic small sizes: are faces, labels, pens, manga icons with moustaches…? What’s about colour and plot limitations? And finally, “Think Spreadshirt” imho also needs lot of work ahead; checking it out with some friends they do not recognize the icon as a “bubble, label or shirt icon” at first view You need to “explain” what’s really represents, so that’s should be a “negative point”. It shouldn´t speak by itself? Good luck anyway to 3 finalists.
Ohhh. No wonder it was so surprising. In that case then, yeah I probably agree about labelheads and think spreadshirt being in the top 3.
Yeah this is his picks for 1st,2nd and 3rd place. Innovation award we’re discussing separately and I’ll hopefully reveal the winner tomorrow or Thursday.
oops sorry, it wasn’t clear for me i think that was innovation shorlist
@grafismo Its not good for a logo to be too literal…I see some abstract approaches in your logos too and I like them:)
:) oops sorry dr Frank Piller … plates excuses :)
Ah, the best three prices?? I misunderstood the text from Frank Piller…
Adam, is Frank in the Jury? If yes it would be not a big surprise for the winners at saturday…
Yep Franks in the jury. Tomorrow hopefully we’ll reveal ISO50’s then Branded’s etc each day. We’ve also done surveys internally and with our shop-partners so there are lots of opinions to take into account.
