Not only designs that are in the Grand Final can win a prize at the olp, we also have panel prizes for rewarding the best stuff that for one reason or another we couldn’t pick as our new logo. Each panel prize has a different area of interest. Today lets discuss Frank Pillers Innovativeness prize. Which design do you think has shown really genius, in concept or execution and really pushed the envelope?I’ve come up with a few suggestions, but I’d rather hear what you think, if you want to big up your own entries feel free, I already mentioned Pascalphillys InvitationAlizarines Created By, Individal Design by Japasa and Cut Cut by Mootsie when I first introduced the prize so I’ll only give passing references to those. Other entries from recent weeks:

Alexander Wende’s Growing from this week

Tarzoin1.6’s a child play was a very interesting and unusual idea

Japasa’s Hands for the way it combines the end product with the handmade process.

Laurents many logos always have a strong and different concept, so a few of those could also make this list I’d say and two of our finalists that Franks voted in the past Beans Universal Language and Inadimovas Think Spreadshirt Update

What would be your top 1,2 or 3 picks for this prize? What made you think wow that’s an awesome concept, I haven’t seen that before?

My vote is for Laurent, with so many different ideas in this contest!
I can’t assume which is the more innovative, but this is so original and fresh approach to the “your own label” concept:

Since the contest is pretty much over. There’s no need to be timid, therefore, I nominate myself for my entry:

Okay new rule, you can promote yours if you promote one of somebody elses as well! ;)

Just so we get a better idea what you like….

lol adam! that ’s strange that when it’s time to win and promote yourself, people get in the blog and leave comments…most of the time, it wasn’t the case…that’s just the way people are…

anyway, i will check and leave my choices (i won’t give my creations, i find the process ridiculous…that ’s why the comment update of adam made me laugh)

  9. 9 by jeffersonb | Oct 18th, 2007 at 11:05 am

adam, your really taking away the one of the few moments of fun i’ve had in this contest in a while, shameless self promotion :)

very well. i nominate hands by japasa:

  10. 10 by netweight | Oct 18th, 2007 at 11:05 am

I would give it to grafismo, Alexander Wende or Laurent as a kind of a “Life-Achievement-Award”. All three showed excellent, innovative work on a high level.

  11. 11 by adam | Oct 18th, 2007 at 11:10 am

I definetely agree with you netweight, theres plenty more we could add to that list but those three have been really great.

  12. 12 by Space_Vision | Oct 18th, 2007 at 11:16 am

I vote for this wonderful idea by Ahmad Hania, it is quite unique and professional and especially with the color variations.

  13. 13 by Jebs | Oct 18th, 2007 at 11:18 am

i will nominate Alexander Wende or Laurent too. i don’t want to choose one logo in particular, it’s just that those too tried and managed to create excellent concepts, well executed. (i just saw alexender that you redrawed Growing, in a way, listening to my comment…now it’s just Excellent!)

  14. 14 by Kim | Oct 18th, 2007 at 11:28 am

This prize belongs to Laurent. Here’s one example:

About my entries… I think Fertilize Spreadshirt was quite an innovative concept, although I know it’s no good in exectuion.

    http://olp.spreadshirt.net/entries/2007/10/15/once-upon-a-time-fingers-tee-final-version/

You can also do a prize for the prolix designers (best commentators, best updaters..), what is important is not win really is to really participate??

  20. 20 by mr.jay | Oct 18th, 2007 at 1:09 pm

verry nice and good entries, specially the zebraphant…
but, he cant get all panel prizes…so I want to take one of these… ;-)

:O With a little bit of surprise too thank you Clem! :D

    From you’re proposal:
_I have nevers seen this “A child play” before but it remind me really so much “The signal”..it’s just for me something similar?
_I think from this five AlexandreWende but more for “customize clothes2″, than for “Growing”!
_But of course also “Think Spreadshirt Update” maybe!

If u wanna just take a look also at alphameetsomega :P !
(I don’t wanna said one from the ours, for me the fingers, the spread ‘n’ shout, the taglable, the toungue, … I know the concept of every of this entries, and for me there’s something good in everyone and honestly as normal I like it, that it’s normal when u work and think a lot upon something but just loose two minutes and take a look ;) )

kontrasto - I didn’t mean specifically you, just wanted to point out that there are more prizes that award different things.

  26. 26 by azzaoui | Oct 18th, 2007 at 2:51 pm

Not only designs that are in the Grand Final can win a prize at the olp ! so why nominate always the same :)

  27. 27 by azzaoui | Oct 18th, 2007 at 3:04 pm

All the designs below are our hidden gems. After digging back through the archives and asking the OLP community of designers we selected these as Wildcards getting another shot at the final.

why not making wildcards for week 6 and 7 ??? it’s better and more interesting for all deigners , :)

  28. 28 by azzaoui | Oct 18th, 2007 at 3:06 pm

designers :) this idea was submitted first by jeb and i completely agree with him - that’s maybe a fair solution hum my english is not so good :)

  29. 29 by azzaoui | Oct 18th, 2007 at 3:37 pm

the problem is that on the first weeks and the last weeks there was a big difference on levels and numbers of participations. so i’s difficult to give chances to everyone some points have to be improved …

however it was a pleasure to participate :)

  30. 30 by pascalphilly | Oct 18th, 2007 at 3:45 pm

It looks lame but I gonna vote for myself:
    http://olp.spreadshirt.net/entries/author/pascalphilly/

More than once one of my designs has been referred to in the main blog and several times I made it to the weekly finalist. Thus it seems that you must have liked my stuff and so I think it does not stink too much to suggest myself :D
    Cheers!

  34. 34 by P.S. | Oct 18th, 2007 at 5:03 pm

    I don’t know what am I doing here anymore…

I guess I actually was traumatized after all…

    Anyway,
I will give my last contribution to this project.

I will not talk about any of these proposed designs because it will sound as insult…
…But I realy don’t find them special or even complete…
Some have good idea but not saying all they should say (Not obvious enough), some have not so special idea at all but sparkling realization which many people like… (Not me)…, Some are too complicated but saying nothing about Spread Shirt or Our Own Labels… Some are simple, but too simple and also missing direct messages. The other are interesting looking and have interesting ideas but these ideas are not so good connected with meanings of this required ideas of SpreadShirt, YourOwnLabel, personal designing and sharing it with the world….
All in all… Really, BUT REALLY… I don’t think that any of selected works, both, here and among the Grand Finalists, TOTALY COMPLETE this quest. There is always something missing…

There for I think that the old fingerprint logo even better gives the answers to this new slogan!!!
    Your Own Label… I mean…
Print of our finger realy IS our own label and there is nothing to explane or spend energy to promote this quite obvious idea. I hope you will keep the old one because not even one of ”your” new choice is even close to the old one with it’s symbolism, idea or even simple answering to the new meanings… Your Own Label…

I have tried to make some of my own improvements to this subject… I have succeeded somewhere more or less… Also with some lack here and there… But more in execution because I didn’t had much time, that with the very idea. I consider all my ideas better than at least half of the Grand Finalist… (…Being modest again…) But one is for sure… It wasn’t easy to answer all requirements here… And mostly the problem was in expressing the idea of ”YOUR OWN”… Something that should be personal… Hopefully for the goodness of SpreadShirt’s future…. I thought it should be experienced as VERY personal… So realy support that story about Individuals who will express themselves here…

I consider ”My passion” idea of mine the most inovative in this matter… There for…
I will eat my pride and give you another chance to reconsider your thoughts…
At least at the inovative idea approach.

    http://olp.spreadshirt.net/entries/2007/10/10/my-passion/

From other designs, there is one that was very inovative according to my oppinion… Even one of two best coted finalist was built on his idea… You will recognize is… Therefor I think some people need to give their thanks to the real author of this idea…
The ”Signal” is ”Label Cut Hole” made by Prince. Especialy, if you are not much imaginative person… pay attention to the the black simple version on white background.

    http://olp.spreadshirt.net/entries/2007/09/08/label-hole-cut/

I know I was inspired a bit with this when creating my Eye-label design trying to improve it a little bit because I found it too simple. That problem is the only thing that I don’t find this THE BEST DESIGN idea here… and not giving my vote to ”Label Cut Hole”.

The others as I said… have it’s nice and sparkling moments… But at least in the matter of inovative idea they are all… MUCH, MUCH… far behind this one…

  35. 35 by wanshu | Oct 18th, 2007 at 5:10 pm

since you mentioned Japasa’s Hands, you should definitely check this out.

    http://olp.spreadshirt.net/entries/2007/10/14/pick-your-own/#more-12960

which shows more the costumer’s involvement in the end product. It’s like picking and placing your own shirt out there - the process which involves both spreadshirt and the costumer - a tru partnership from beginning to end!

    cheers to all!

  36. 36 by yonda.tv | Oct 18th, 2007 at 5:10 pm

well, no one of the finalist is better than the actual logo, maybe a clipart contest can help, but….when you say “SpreadShirt you own label” you say label, an awful word…. you cannot repeat of course shirt ……spreadshirt your own shirt ? the label doesnt exist, its your heart, your soul, your brain, but not your label…label are in the shirts just to put made in china.

  37. 37 by legofish | Oct 18th, 2007 at 5:12 pm

I think pascalphilly deserves recognition for his contributions. There’s certainly a lot of innovation in “So Easy” in particular.

  38. 38 by Kim | Oct 18th, 2007 at 5:21 pm

P.S: Do you know anything about graphic design? I mean, can you confidentially confirm that this is a serious contribute to the discussion?

Hehe, man you are not clever. Even if someone liked your submissions before you’d definitely ruined their opinion by now. This is funny.

  39. 39 by wanshu | Oct 18th, 2007 at 5:21 pm

forgot to mention one of my favorites

    http://olp.spreadshirt.net/entries/2007/10/14/torn-label/#more-12922

    very nice.

  40. 40 by P.S. | Oct 18th, 2007 at 5:49 pm

Thank you dear Kim for being my Psychologist.
Yet this is not about me being clever or not, This is not about me at all. This is about graphic design. You may have such an attitude but as long as you are functioning on such mental frequentions… there won’t me much of the designer of you.
Also this is not either about who have better language capabilities in speaking english or penetrative personality… so with daring ingenious coments could promote, advertize or mock and doing anti campaigne in some other cases…

This should just be about graphic design… and capabilities to express well prepared ideas in a graphic way… Simple as that… And all other talk is sufficiant…

That is why I didn’t join any ”Fellowship of the RINGING” here…. And give my contribute to sensless, but very witty but almos alway with premeditation and some hidden desire. I have join this project too late… That is a fact… Barely 10 days before ending… But even If I came earlier I wouldn’t start to act ”friendly” and join the group only in purpose to promote my own ideas as many did it… There for I am truly disapointed with decision of the Spread Shirt to give such an importance to the chat of people who drop by here…

    Anyway…
I don’t think that ingenious talk will make some design better or worse….

So don’t worry about me Kim…
I know that you can not be aware of it…
    But…
    I have prove myself already…
    And best wishes to you…
’cause beside your probable problems as a designer… You obviously have some mental problems as well…
    Good luck with all…

  41. 41 by adam | Oct 18th, 2007 at 5:52 pm

Torn Label is very nice, surprised that didn’t make the wk7 shortlist now I see it again :(

  42. 42 by kontrasto | Oct 18th, 2007 at 5:53 pm

Could you guys from SS please explain P.S. why his logos weren’t picked? At least - hopefully - he will make his peace after. I’m sorry but I can’t accept arrogance. “I consider all my ideas better than at least half of the Grand Finalists”, “I will eat my pride and give you another chance to reconsider your thoughts”… Who do you think you are? If you are so good how comes you are not head graphics in some big company, but taking part to contests you spit on instead? Plus you know what? “My passion” is actually nice, but the other ones? They pretty much suck.

    Good luck Laurent man !

    Peace & Love

  44. 44 by P.S. | Oct 18th, 2007 at 6:22 pm

    Dear Kontrasto,
That wasn’t ignorance that was mine but also the oppinion of many other people, either supporting my work or just can not believe in such a failure with designs on this Spread Shirt OLP. If you want to hear how spitting sound read your post again or visit my works at
    http://olp.spreadshirt.net/entries/author/ps/
..especially at my second work from above… but other as well…
Thank you for liking ”my passion”…
And don’t get mad because there are people who don’t found this project successful… And that could be an issue for debate… why that happened…
The fact that most of the majority that agree with me will not participate in this ‘’serious contribute to the discussion” as Kim said doesen’t mean that they don’t exist. Loud minority speakers can overcome the silent majority but that doesen’t mean that they are right AT ALL..
And that is why this kind of so called ”democratic” project made it’s failure. Maybe our votes have same stregth when we vote for our goverments… But our works and value of our oppinions could never be the same. And this is not about taste… I like this and I don’t like that… But therefor there exist the true experts to spot what is good and what is not, what is important and what isn’t much… The clever mub can not do that well.

    And this OLP failed…
There isn’t EVEN ONE WORK there that give all the answers for ”Spread Shirt - Your Own Label” request!

  45. 45 by P.S. | Oct 18th, 2007 at 6:28 pm

    sorry… There should stand…

”clever mob” not ”clever mub”… My english is not so good…

  46. 46 by Nelson | Oct 18th, 2007 at 6:57 pm

Respect to the results and peace people!

  47. 47 by kontrasto | Oct 18th, 2007 at 7:35 pm

P.S. Of course you and anybody else have the right to say this contest had flaws and criticize it if you think so, but there’s a line between saying what one thinks and being disrespectful to others. Look out for jeffersonb’s comment on Wk7 shortlist post. There you will see the difference between freedom of thought and expression against insult and disrespect.

  48. 48 by P.S. | Oct 19th, 2007 at 3:06 am

I don’t need your lessons dear friend. Also your aprovement to say what I have. And if you try harder to understand what was I talking about you’ll realize that I wasn’t insulting and disrespectful to anyone but I have to remind you and all other people who think as you do…. that this here, is not about me, or you, or anyone here around… This is all about graphic design and solutions that came out here. And that is how you should interpretate my comments. Get it now or I should draw it? ; )

I am not interested in people here generaly. Neither in being polite, neither in being rude. Also I am not interested in examples of how the comment of mine should look so you or anyone other can consider it as accptable. However I am not being unpolite but I had few situations actually where I had to listen so many nonsences here. Some were directed to me and some weren’t. Some were insulting quite obvious and the other were just nonsences… I have even illustrated few in my previous comments.

Anyway if someone felt insulted I do appologise, honestly…
Yet they have problematic perseption. I have even give up of commenting people’s designs because I knew that people will get it wrong. But I feel bored in analysing so many wrong things here…

I am aware that my comments will have no effect and that they will change nothing. Probablz push even more your obvious misapprehensions…
I knew that from the start…
Yet I had to say what I think about all this 1.6 Odd Lousy Project.
And I am sure that there are people who agree with me…
And not just among participators who wasted they work and time, but among other neutral designers everywhere… Even in the Spread Shirt or OLP crew as well. I am 100% possitive about this.

I repeate, I am not interested and I was never talking about people here…
I was talking about certain appearances here which are disapointing. In both, organisation (the solution how to value the graphics) and graphics as successfuly answers to the requests.

This project failed and there isn’t even one ”Spread Shirt - Your Own Label” work and you can talk whatever you like…
Yet nothing will make it better.

Adverise anything you wish… Or pick me as a subject and talk about me… Or ignore me and let yourself to congratulations and compliments…
    Yet…
Not so good design will stay not so good…
And that is not an insult…
    That is a fact.
    Take it or ignore it…
    It doesn’t matter to me.
    Farewell~

  51. 51 by grafismo | Oct 19th, 2007 at 8:39 am

Just my 2 cents: I don´t think P.S, is insulting to anybody here. He (or she, sorry if not) is just talking about design in a pasionate mood but giving us his solid arguments. I’m not feel offended at all if any of all of my designs don’t like someone else. They are point of views. Rude or not, It’s a visual comunnication issue to sort out, so we as designers must struggle with clients problems and try to reach a satisfactory solution both customer and us. It’s our job. I’m not coming here to receive and send taps and flowers everyone. I’m here to participate, try to win something and in anycase have some fun with this kind of discussions. Also to critize some SS competition aspects that I feel are flaws or I dislike (as I’ve done). Sure next OLP will be better and improved. And of course, keep learning from you, guys. Anyway It’s has been a great experience. Cheers!

  52. 52 by adam | Oct 19th, 2007 at 9:00 am

Not going to happen I’m afraid Azzaoui. Wildcards were supposed to be for re-evaluating what came in during the early weeks, with the benefit of seeing all the logo that came in since that point. Giving a little advantage and thanks back to those that have been submitting since the beginning knowing that hundreds more would be submitted at the end (although 4 or 5 were still being worked on and a version of which had been submitted in wk6 & 7). Plus voting is opening today, I’m sad about it to but OLP is coming to an end now i’m afraid and we’re really happy with what we have in the final :)

  53. 53 by azzaoui | Oct 19th, 2007 at 10:12 am

    @adam

thanks for the work you have done here

i am just a bit disapointed you said you had about 700 entries this week that is why idon’t understand why you chossed only two designs this week .

well i worked a lot to fit to the concept of creative process and i think that my logo had its place in grand final - i think a bout 4 design should have made it this week . just for a better grand final representing more style of designers of this contest.

any way i will try next year but :(

    thanks again.

Yeah Designers Open is not a Spreadshirt event, we’ll just be part of it so if they invented a time machine traveled into the future stole your logo design, traveled back and implemented if I’d recommend you travel into the future to the point where they are about to travel back, and break their machine, of course when they fix it a revenge attack is possible, perhaps when you visit the future you should just permanently “remove” them from being a threat to your intellectual property. Sounds like my first science fiction screenplay just wrote itself :)

By the way @ the spreadshirt staff:

Are there any news about a olp 1 1.6 contest book or something like that? ^^

When do u reveal the ISO 50 prize? I’m a very big fan of Scott Hansons work & pretty curious about what it would be!

I kinda agree with some people here about a possible the wildcards for 6&7. Mostly because the actual wildcard results were such a joke. They weren’t even wildcards by any stretch of the imagination. They were the same conservative picks that were just rehashed from past shortlist. That means they were already discussed thoroughly and didn’t cut it the first time. We all remember week 5. Even if you argue that they were changed somehow. Take a look, some color was changed, an extra circle was removed. That was it. There was nothing fundamentally changed about the two logos that warranted being “the wildcards” of the contest. So funny. Oh well.

Actually, why not a wildcard for week 6&7? User votes doesn’t even determine the winning logo. It’s just “taken into consideration” :)

ISO50 has fallen off the radar a little bit, I guess he’s touring, let me chase him up and push it. The prize will be Scott Hansen created though, so he’ll pick a big goodie bag collection of stuff and award it.

@Jeffersonb: The contest is over i’m afraid, time to pick a winner award 1,2,3rd and the panel prizes. Even if we agreed that we should have wk6&7 wildcards the time is up now and we need to get moving with picking a winner, although I can see some merit in the idea of specific wk6&7 wildcards I don’t think its necessary. Yep we reserve the right to make the final decision, i’m surprised thats surprising? :)

And the best prize is surprise?

    Yeah, yeah…

    Can I return my prize? : )

    I don’t think I have deserved it!

Maybe you can share it among other participators?

I guess there are many designers passionately hoping to get for their work such a prize as these surprise…..es…

    At the end…

This was all about fun and being happy and you shouldn’t consider it too seriously…

    Finally…
    The design is not math…

Actually design is about making desicisions…
And everyone’s judgment will be valid… and can participate in judging…
But at the and we have the final decision…

…Shall we turn this square into a circle or triangle?…

    ; )

Sorry for still bothering you with this shi(r)t of mine, but obviously that I am still surprised and feelin bad for waisting my time and ideas for nothing…

    But I guess… I wasn’t even close with my ideas…

Fortunately we have so many great solutions here… And all of them entirely answer to Spread Shirt - Your Own Label… (Yes that was the name if someone is already have forgot it) requests.

The only problem will be what square to pick?

    But don’t worry…

Some qualified people WILL ACTUALLY have final word and make the decisions at the end…

So the voice of the the very few Holy Chat People isn’t needed anymore…

    Glad to hear that.

    Good luck
    and enjoy your convictions!

I was hoping to reveal them before the main one, every few days. Depends how long it takes each panel member to make the decision about who should win their prize. But it wont be on the 27th thats for sure, they’ll already be too much to reveal with the 1,2,3rd winners.
