Two clear finalists emerged in the end:
1. Molecular Goodness by Thescientists
We like this for a number of reasons. The concept of building blocks made up of molecules is interesting. Its visually appealing (look beyond the smarties ;), can work stand alone, has a deeper meaning and shows the fun, creative and colourful side of Spreadshirt. It might take a little simplifying for smaller sizing, or to help people visualize what we do, but we think there are enough options as Thescientists began to explore in the additional images.
Its also interestingly from a design team, an all star collaboration of Pandar (Legofish creator of Labelheads) & Shahin. That didn’t help it reach the final, but its worth mentioning as only a few collaboration entries came in (mostly are fault for not giving you the tools)
Some quotes:
“hey, everyone: these logos can be concepts to not just old fashioned branding where you mark your cow with a hot iron… I like this concept a lot - I think it’s not too advanced to be implemented using current standards. Good work, guys! (and/or gals?) ” said emperorsnewclothinginc
“Like the idea but i think that the final logo looks a little complicated when its really small, like on the website example, besides that i like it :).” said Dima
2. The Signal by Laurent
Loads of love from this in the comments and definitely some of the highest enthusiasm I’ve seen from Jana and Ami, the most votes this week go to The Signal by Laurent. Here are some comments:
“I really like this concept, so much deeper than a lot of them, simple bold and has unlimited options. Modern too.” said Esteban.
“Laurent killed me…For me you are really one of the best designer of this competition ! This one is just AWESOME !” said Lufograf
Ami’s review “It’s not about the hole. It is not about that there are no other holes in this world - or that everything looks better in a circle. This submission is about the context, about looking differently on different materials. And it would be a true successor to the fingerprint, where we started to use different fingerprints in different contexts. Really, the interesting part comes if you put it on some shirts and it always would look different - not like a “perfect” hole, but a little crumpled, and like pmd said - more of a “living logo”.”
The following also got a votes Your Ideas wk7 by Pascalphilly (incidentally my pick from this week, in case your interested ;), Flat TM by Jaehyo Jung, Sign Here by Davidnguyen and The Blank by PMD but didn’t have quite enough to push them into the Grand Final.
So our 15 Grand Finalists are now confirmed see them all here http://olp.spreadshirt.net/finalists/category/grand-finalists/
Sorry to those that made the shortlist but not the final, you still did great we had a lot of entries in week seven!
Tomorrow we’ll open voting for you to tell us which is your favourite. Thanks to everyone that’s taken part, and thanks for making the job of picking so difficult for us over the past seven weeks.

congrats to the finalists. Just a question mentioned in your brief : “Work with our print techniques particularly be plot printable”; so don’t vector graphics for plot printing should have up to three colours per design and 1,5 mm diameter limit?
Yep some simplification of this would be needed as we said, colour wise we think it could work, lufografs play with the forms is not a million miles away from this and works with less colours http://olp.spreadshirt.net/entries/2007/10/05/play-with-the-forms/
If you find a way to “shrink” Molecular Goodness in a good way, that might become my fav! About the signal, I don’t like it that much. I think it’s too generic, all I can see in it is a circle, period. Laurent came up with so much better stuff, in my opinion. Anyway, congratulations to both! I’m so jealous ;)
Yes, that’s was the point Adam. I think lugograf enrty has sorted out much better the plot-printing limit and his design overall when working with multiple shapes or icons. If you remove colours from “molecular goodness” design certainly it will loose initial visual impact. Also it’s probably will cause technnical problems at small scales. Of course, the other wk7 finalist entry (laurent) has not tech problems at all with his proposal.
Once upon a time, when you made the weekly finalists list entries, you wrote the comments from the panel. Now you quote comments from us that we’ve already read (or even written) in the entry itself. Is the panel still helping in the judgement?
I ask because one thing I liked about this contest was having the possiblity to read feedbacks from people I admire like ISO50 and such…
I try to give feedback from the panel every week, unfortunately as we only fixed up the shortlist last night, and had to pick a winner today (we have some time pressures within the company to start implementing our new logo) there was no time for panel feedback this week :(
Now we’ll contact all the panel again and get longer more detailed feedback for which of the grand finalists they think should be the winner, what they liked about the contest and start thinking about which logo they want to win their prize. Sorry theres none of their feedback on this weeks shortlist.
when do you sleep? :-)
I’ve tried to see The Signal as a working logotype, but I’m afraid it’s too much thought put into this. No reference to reality. I mean, it really is a great execution, but that is about it. It doesn’t matter how much thought you put into a circle, it’ll still be a blank message. When looking for visual a synonym, the only one I can find is the letter O or a zero, and that’s probably how the human will interpret it. “The fat circle” could work for a more ‘abstract’ business though.
Oh not! The superheroes have been defeated, his skills will not be able to show to the world, but if any worker of spreadshirt finds the disguise of anyone, who guards it and uses it for the good! We will never know who one was below, maybe adam, maybe jana or maybe I! Hahaha
Congratulations to the big finalists, and I wait that The Signal by Laurent or Lovetab by Kimlarsen are the winners!
Good luck!
Oh, sorry, I can’t understand the decision. A hole is a hole. If you see only a hole you don’t think for a shirt. A hole like others misguides people who don’t know spreadshirt. The old label with the fingerprint is more significant than this hole. So I agree Kim. It’s really weird.
And the smarties: o_O
I’m so sorry for other shortlist-participants, they were much better, for example pascalphilly.
I wonder why I keep being surprised by your choices, … oh boy.
Thanks calva and everyone else who supported me, good luck for all the finalists and have fun!
Just… it’s WONDERFULL :-)))
Thanks a lot, in particular Jana and Ami for your support.
since you consider competitors’ thoughts about their entries , I just wanted to write down a couple of things and even give points to each “grand” finalist (I couldn’t wait for the voting to open , sorry) ;
TITLE | LOGO POINT | PRESENTATION POINT
1.Bubble Label | 1/5 | 1/5
(I felt nothing special about this logo , it could be a logo of any company’s)
2.Your Own Logo | 2/5 | 2/5
(I think it’s nice , but it’s too simple , it’s only a t-shirt , nothing special again , sorry)
3.Play with the forms | 2/5 | 3/5
(It looks great when you think SpreadShirt as a “multi-product” or “multi-brand” company like “Harvey Nichols” , but including so many shapes/designs behaves a little bit cheap in this , because I’m not choosing SpreadShirt for selecting one of the shapes from menu)
4.Universal Language | 3/5 | 4/5
(As I said before , I think this is the most flexible “entry” in the contest , you can skew it to anywhere you want , you can create everything . (I loved your examples , btw what was your idea which is more interesting than the building ad ?) But as a logo , I can’t imagine how it would be , I mean , yes I would like to see it on my shirt , but maybe it’s too conceptual even for me)
5.Pop your collar | 1/5 | 1/5
(I can’t figure out why people showed so much attention to this , I mean a collar is a collar , I know Mrs. Eggers suggested exploring the collar side of the concept , but I’m not able to see the collar side of the concept in this , I just see a green (why green !) collar)
6.Spreadshirt tm | 2/5 | 2/5
(At first sight , it reminded me the number icon (#) , I think it looks nice and professional , but I can’t see a connection to “spreading” or “your own label”)
7.Think SpreadShirt | 1/5 | 1/5
(Read again my comment to “bubble label” , I think they’re “almost same” executions of the same concept)
8.LoveTab | 4/5 | 4/5
(Honestly , when I first see this contest and start thinking about concepts , this idea came to my mind , but it was too late (: (your first thoughts are commonly the right answers) I think it’s great , but you need to find a way to reduce it’s size to a logo (I liked your latest examples , back to the drawing board ones))
9.LabelHeads | 1/5 | 5/5
(This is one of the best two presentations , I must say that I loved playing the flash-game , you’re really good and fast about presentation , but honestly I can’t see a real “logo” in it)
10.Label Spread | 2/5 | 2/5
(I don’t have so much words to say about this , it just looks an ordinary logo to me , I’m trying , but I can’t find a special thing on it)
11.Label Hole-Cut | 1/5 | 3/5
(I liked your examples , I think your idea is nice , but I just see a hole , I mean , right , it screams out “your own label” , but what are they producing ? Without the text , it’s impossible to find out)
12.Tag Your Brand TW1 | 2/5 | 1/5
(I saw a lot of logos like this in later weeks , it looks simple , but it doesn’t have a character (the shape of the tag and the font is selected randomly , they don’t have any purpose))
13.Labelrange | 1/5 | 1/5
(A simple idea again , which stays simple in conceptual dimension . I prefer the first version , because it has an extra-ordinary feature like falling “T” . Honestly I wouldn’t prefer this as my new logo , because it looks so “childish” . Sorry , these are only my thoughts)
14.Molecular Goodness | 3/5 | 2/5
(If I would get close to an “S” like this , I could already see it’s molecules , so nothing special here (: I was joking , I think it’s a beautiful concept , but the size/mono coloring might be a problem)
15.The Signal | 1/5 | 5/5
(This is the other best presentation , but I don’t think the logo is that good . I even think that it’s not a logo , just a presentation , I mean , every logo would take different shapes on different surfaces , so what makes the circle so special?)
Don’t forget , these are only my thoughts .
Anyway , I think the contest was really great , I’ve spent so much time , I’ve learnt so many things . Thanks for people who commented/supported/hated me , it was really funny to see people’s reactions . If you wanna see my other works , you can visit my page , I’m always there . . .

take care . . .
I am big fan of this “circle” too..i have to say it is so deep..! for me it is not just a “circle”or “hole”it is more than tht. It allows me to put in my creativity and imagination. It can be a label cut hole and it also can be a collar,it can be anything in ur life. U can imaging what ever it is. Is like SS provided us a space to release our imagination and creativity.
Circle is a dinamic and important shape in our’s life.Think abt the enviroment, think abt the object ard us..We’re living in a circle too :P
Hey Laurent! pls sell me your old powerbook in cheaper price, don’t worry abt the postage! Clean ur desktop and ready to welcome ur new machine hahah!
in touch!(sorry abt my bad english, iam not good in languages)
HAHA!green yup..!Base on my idea and shapes i created some cute mascots and a out door installation art.
Mascot- Show the friendliness of SS ,easy to connect and sending their messange.
Installation art- It can interact and attract people to have a look, imagine u make those shapes to big object and place all of them into a space.People can touch, play and use them to form the difference shape. It shows the handmade process, idea of SS and make the logo alive.
Anyway i think it is too much for this logo competition. So i decided to keep it in my hardrive. :P
Feel free to visit my flickr and leave a comment if u can.My portfolio will upload soon! ;D For me this contest is not abt winning prizes, the big value of this contest for me is get to know more designers ard the world and sharing our’s knowledge and idea.
We make the world beautiful! :P (Again iam not good in languages)
Congratulations, Laurent!!!
Bravo Laurent !
Why not green, Green? (Sorry, just for the funny wordplay ^^)
i’m SO happy for you Laurent, you derserved one Grand final design, so it is!!!! about molecular goodness, well, again, in small size here is a logo that won’t work at all, even if you make changes, and small sizes print are the most important for spreadshirt, aren’t they? in my opinion of course ;-)
Hmm. Kind of odd choices, even for Spreadshirt.
The signal which is certainly Laurent most ambitious concept but not the strongest. The “living logo” concept actually applies to any logo that is applied to a material that distorts it. And it’s too abstract of an idea to comprehend without an explanation. Don’t get me wrong I think Laurent did great work on the contest but I would like to have seen one of his other designs make it to the grand finalist like “two ribbons” or my “little label” which has a mix of both understated elegance, play, and might have a better chance in the grand finals to be perfectly honest.
Molecular goodness also puzzles me as it is an even more complicated version of lugograf’s play with forms. It’s like a version of it put into a blender. Some of the ideas behind is just so off the wall and has no connection whatsoever. How does a square=easy to use, a triangle=unique, and a circle=quality? And some of the other examples are just so different in style and execution that if used as a brand just isn’t very coherent.
My pick would have been Smart Update by Azzaoui which could be tweaked a bit to fit into a clothing brand but still a great development from previous versions. And Spreaded Wings of Freedom by Formikula which I gotta admit is a strong icon and I liked it even more every time I saw it.
Anyways, those are my 2 cents.
???????? WHAT ….? ONE OF THE WORST.
MAYBE YOU REMEMBER THESE LITTLE HOLE REINFORCEMNT RINGS FOR RING BINDERS. SEE HERE: http://keysan.com/big/picbave2380.html
No need to shout, dogbite, and no need to trash anyone either. We’re civil people here, let’s not forget that.
In my opinion..I think who pay have to decide, I mean there can be the better logo of the world and every graphic designers now that it’s the only one that can work, but if for SpreadShirt is not good, if they don’t like it, I think they don’t have to use it, it’s simple.
It’s like if I have to choose my name, you can find the better name of the world but if I don’t like I don’t use it and I don’t have to!
:)
I’m not agree with all of the choice of course, and in the beginning I was very surprise and a little bit angry but it’s normal, we’re all human, and we can have all different opinion!
I think many good logo, as good (or more) as some of the grandfinal are gone undiscovered on the website.
And also if in the designer brief there’s written that can win also a logo that it’s not on the shortlist, I think it’s a pitty but it’s very difficult to look again at every logo.
Plus if a lot of good logo was undiscovered, I think, is also beacuse a lot of comments and a lot of people..it’s the price of the democracy.
This contest was different from a lot of design contest, was more open, I don’t know if it was better but I’m happy to have been part of, and I’m still.
Alphameetsomega are a collaboration so first of all thanks to Alpha! And thanks to all of the others designers and all the people involved in this project!
And last, good luck to all the logo (the most and the less beautiful) that are in the grandfinal! ;)
Omega
ps So polite..but…damn I’ve dream too much the mac to don’t be a little bit angry now grrrrr!
It’s not shouting or trashing it’s just incomprehension, confusion and disbelieve that something like that could make it to the finals seeing all the great other designs which didn’t make it. Especially when you hold it against the brief. The Signal could be a ‘logo’ for anything but I don’t see the special connection to spreadshirt and it’s business.
