One or two of you have been outspoken about our play it safe shortlist choice this week, great we really welcome your input. Now feels like the right time to introduce a feature we haven’t discussed yet, wildcards.

Basically we’ll review old designs again and they can be re-evaluated for a shortlist or even grand finalists slot! Find out all you need to know in the full post

To recap, we picked the weekly model as we thought it would keep the contest more interesting, not just submit and then come back and the end and see if you won. The designs can sort of evolve, and as we get a better idea what we’re looking for, so do you by viewing the shortlist and grand finalists.

It does have some downsides though

- Lots of people keep resubmitting updated version, so the total number of logos is very high

- What we want does fluctuate, as much as we try to stop it. Its possible you have little bouts where you forget the brief. You’ve bashed us a bit for it, like when we picked Label Range back in wk1.

The opposite is also true, we already agreed internally that we should have acknowledged the great concepts of this week like AlexanderWende’s Against Nudity or Your are the Key, but we didn’t, we played it a little safe with our shortlist choice.

Its very hard to view objectively at any point as you’ll know ;)

So to support the weekly idea, we already agreed internally before the contest started that we would have “wildcards”.

These are opportunities for earlier designs that didn’t make the shortlist, or made the shortlist but not the Grand Final to be re-evaluated again. Why?

- Maybe we werent ready for an off the wall concept back in the early weeks

- Maybe something got overlooked buried under an avalanche of entries. As with seen with many entries, its not always easy to get a concept until you’ve spent some time with it, seen all the additional usage examples etc. So no-doubt we missed some great stuff, and “wildcards” are our way of acknowledging that and giving all the designs a chance again.

So how does it work?

1. You help us, we look back through earlier weeks and we all suggest designs we’d like to see “wildcarded”.

2. We discuss them internally and with you here and in follow up posts.

3. We make a decision on them, either they can just jump into the grand final or they go onto a little wildcard shortlist.

The process is not set in stone, there might only be one wildcard design, there might be 5 it depends how many great designs we find in the vaults.

So, please help us and for the start find the hidden gems in wk1 & 2. I’ve gone back and made picks categories for those weeks where you can start if you like, or just view the whole lot:

wk1 all, wk1 picks

wk2 all, wk2 picks

I’ll go first (feel free to ridicule my lack of taste) here are my ones that got away from wk1 and wk2:

Created by - by Alizarine

Not an obscure one, it nearly made the grand final. I’m still loving this idea of us providing the frame, the customer adding their own image or elements to the logo.

Your Ideas - Your Label by Pascalphilly

I love that concept, surreal, interesting and I really like the idea of pulling out whats in your head and showing it on a shirt, it really stresses imagination to me.

Feel free to ridicule me, i’ve shown you mine, show me yours in the comments, who should be wildcarded from wk1&2? Have fun ;)

that is the BIG good juicy surprise of today. I think that the wildcards are a great idea, really! about yours, i want to say that even if i didn’t comment this one of PascalPhilly, it’s a nice design! it could be reworked to be use in a lot of variations (right now it’s hard…). I’ll play the game tommorrow giving you my choices :-)

PS: i’ve sent you a mail adam, because of a wrong file sent (noob mistake, i sent a wrong sized file, and seeing it right now is a pain in the a** )

I think you must chek this again: Your Own Logo by MuamerDESIGN - from wk2
I don’t know how you miss this one?

as I remember this logo has an update somewhere…

Ehm, nobody missed it, it was in the week shortlist and it is also one of the favourites of some grandfilnalists and now it’s in the wk2picks..
Btw nice news, specially because all of my logos are in the wk2picks (wich somehow compensate for the frustrating silence of wk5) :P

Hi! I will recover “label” http://olp.spreadshirt.net/entries/2007/09/02/label-2/ (from w1k). I would get rid of the label background ( for me it’s reiterative), but the combination of 2 letter “S” is powerful enough by itself.

    So, here we go!

the first 2 weeks, i noticed that Kreadid made really good logos, and i think that reworking some of his entries, he can make it ;-)

this one: http://olp.spreadshirt.net/entries/2007/09/05/paint/ is pretty good, if he makes variations, the logo on the left of the font, alternatives shapes, and colors, well, if he digs it, it can be a very good one!

then, i can’t hide that i loved what did Laurent all through the 6 weeks…i am a big fan of his stylish and classy designs…

i want to see this one reworked, with of course a white background, and less glossy effects for the main logo, for me, the concept is pretty strong!

that’s it for the moment, cheers! :-)

That wildcard thing is a great opportunity to review forgotten designs. I am glad you introduced it.

Also I am glad you mentioned my “Your ideas - your label” (http://olp.spreadshirt.net/entries/2007/09/04/your-ideas-your-label/) because I was so in blind love with it that I was surprised it did not make it:) I still think its a logo that talks a lot to the viewer.

Anyway. I gonna keep my eyes open for possible wildcards. Shall they be named here in this thread or just as a new comment in that eg. 2nd week category?

The design is on the wk1 shortlist here:

Oops, didn’t see the “previous entries” link at the bottom of the respective pages and that it’s meant to be page 2,3,4 etc.

Sorry guys, if it has more than 2 links it goes in for moderation. Just saw 4 waiting, now all approved

You can add them here, they’ll be more posts about wildcards upcoming so you can add your suggestions, here, there and everywhere. I think I’ll make a post of all your suggestions soon…

This is a really good thing, so that good ideas dont get lost in this mass of submissions!
    Some suggestions for the wildcards:

    http://olp.spreadshirt.net/entries/2007/09/14/iconic-label/
(this is so easy, its shirt and a label or document what could mean company or trading etc)

    http://olp.spreadshirt.net/entries/2007/09/04/your-ideas-your-label/
(yeah I also like this, because its so creative, fun, ideas-exploading, there is just so much engergy)

    http://olp.spreadshirt.net/entries/2007/09/12/tag-and-fingerprint/
(a good way how to reuse the old logo, its your fingerprint on that label)

    http://olp.spreadshirt.net/entries/2007/10/09/yourideas-yourlabel_w7/
(I like this new version very much because there is a signification that inspriation is coming into head and creativity/ideas are coming out from this head.

    http://olp.spreadshirt.net/entries/2007/09/05/fast-reliable-funny-v2/
(it is really interesting to see this logo because there is a little optical illusion that there are two different perspective of shirt and label)
