So the great start continues, we’re hovering near the 120 design mark now. Now we have a decision to make should we start to seperate designs or just keep everything together? More info and your chance to vote in the full post.
Originally we set this as weekly contest, with no central gallery for the following reasons:
a) You’ll see from the entries we push into the final whats popular with us, community and the panel and it can guide future submissions.
b) Its stops all the submissions at the start getting buried by the avalanche of entries that usually come at the end.
c) The gallery was really bad last time, there is no simple automated way of managing it.
d) We can show this weeks entries in the main area, and archive the rest so you don’t have to hunt through hundreds of designs when you come to the site.
Actually D is sort of not true anymore, it is getting a little cumbersome to scroll through all the designs.
One solution would be that we filter the submissions a little bit and introduce a b list area.
We want this to be as open a contest as possible, hence OPEN logo project, so we want to show everything. Designs which don’t seem close enough to the brief, or are of a lower standard than the rest could go into the B list area. Remember we’re running this contest because we want a new logo which will support our new claim “your own label” and visually represent our business.

So even great designs like the gorilla aren’t going to work, because they don’t support “your own label” or are relevant to our business, so they would be for the b area. The design is so good I’m thinking of stealing it and starting a fashion label for gorillas, but thats off the point.
The B area would be a seperate category, not shown by default when you’re in the entries area, but you can enter by a prominent link in the sidebar. There all the B designs are shown. You can comment them, and use them for inspiration in your future designs. There would be no exact science of which designs fall into the a) or b) category, it would be up to the approver but we could always re-categorize designs. Hopefully this way the A’s would get more visibility and comments and it would help see what everyone liked.
What do you think? Would it just turn into one big argument over what designs are relevant, what should be an a and what should be a b? Vote below, or suggest a better system in the comments:

Hmm, why don’t you simply put the designs in weekly archives like week1, week2 and so on and just pick a winner each week like i believe the contest rules state ?
If the response has been bigger than you expected, perhaps they could be split into daily archives? It’s a bit bothersome trawling through 13 pages of archives barely 3 days into the competition.
Failing that, perhaps you can get the folks at spreadshirt to pick their top five of each day and put them in a new section.
Yep, we’ll have weekly archives. But I’m wondering from this weeks experience if that is enough, just an idea I thought we could discuss. Of course the results are a little skewed if I didnt make it clear that we’ll have weekly archives anyway.
weekly archives should be enough. this way you don’t really have to reject anyone’s work. just pick out the brightest.
@dag: I think your right.
Thanks to everyone that voted. Lets leave it for week 2 and see what happens, we’re expecting that the submission numbers will drop, so lets wait and see. But thanks for all your feedback, can’t believe only 2 of you like trees!
