To discuss about Fonts its a very large field but even important. Next to the visuals, typography is the second important element in a kombination of trademarkt/logo. Here is the right place to discuss about fonts and typography!

hmm….ok … does spreadshirt need an “own” font ?!
It could be more usefull to use a clear, beautiful standard-font like Verdana and to variate it with some little effects.
the advantage is that you can use such a font on websites like spreadshirt.net | .de | .com, too, and have one structurated typographie and corporate identity.
And …well, in fact the website is the most important way for spreadshirt customers to buy their fashion.

…and such fonts are good for plotting, too ;-)

Verdana hasn’t embedded good hints for a good look in small sizes. Good fonts have special information to look nice in smaller sizes too. On the screen you have only pixel. When you’re writing at small sizes you’re loosing important information (like serifs). The hints decide which pixel to choose (you don’t have pixel betweens the pixels).

So, what I want to say is: please don’t use Verdana as the mainfont in the Logo ;)- For the website… ok.

    jesus ^^
when you use plott-graphics and so on, the graphic must be vector-based …that means, that you write what you want to write for example biiiiiiiig in verdana and then you convert it into vectors ….
when you have the vector-data, you can make it smaller or bigger without any loose of quality …

the fonts, created by Adrian Frutiger, are genious too ! :)

i’d personally suggest some kind of futura… there are many, some are free.

    Just my thoughts:

First of all I want to say that the discussion about Fonts is impossible, because you can not separate font from the logo. The influences between the font and logo are vital. But I want to say something to the previous posts:

    1. Verdana is just a Font optimized for display typography - it is not a really Font for Print. The spationierung (I don’t know the exact english name for letter spacing) is bad in different pt.

    2. Fonts are embedded vectors (every font exclusive bitmap fonts), so there is no need of converting a font into paths.

    3. The Futura is a really straight geometrical Font, but you need to get your hand on each single letter - the space between each letter isn’t harmoniously like every other good font. So you must have a really good hand for this font.

    4. Adrian Frutiger was a genius – but there are much more… like Lucas de Groot, Ed Benguiat, Hermann Zapf, Jan Tschichold, Eric Gill, William Caslon (just a few, there are more!).

Comparing Verdana and Frutiger-Fonts is like comparing a VW-Käfer with a Porsche.

I agree with pixelroom. But Verdana would never be an option for a logo (for me). Well, this discussion is not very copious.

    ^^ @getimo …that is a very bad argument *lol
because porsche was a designer on vw before he startet his own business :P ….there also exist some vw-porsche yet …
well, verdana isn’t as fine as some other fonts, but it is a standard ….would be a good font for the website - and I think this is the most important place for spreadshirt ?!
otherwise you have to use arial …and it isn’t much better ….. isn’t it the job of a designer to make a clear and fine logo whether/although it is verdana or not?!
well, there are a lot of other fonts, too, but I prefer simple ones …. don’t like the style of an universe or some kind of times-ne-roman-style …that doesn’t look modern …only looks conservative

    Hmmm…

What about Creampuff? Imho, Spreadshirt and Creampuff belong together - in a way. ;)

  11. 11 by voss | Feb 21st, 2006 at 10:59 am

you are talking about it as being ‘conservative’ and that directly sounds negative. others may say ‘classic’ and ’stylish’. of course ist doesnt have to be times new roman or times - you could also choose Georgia.

I think the best font for Spreadshirt is “Arial(-black)”.
It is a very bold font, so that all the people know: “WE ARE SPREADSHIRT!”
But it must be without…. ähm dont know the word sry.
    Here: http://olp.spreadshirt.net/wordpress/index.php?p=1190
like mine, you can teste it: Write Spreadshirt with arial and look whats different. (:

But hey, you can use so many fonts and make them look better, but the point is, that it dont be tooooo kiddy like, because than you loose you seriously.

sry, i have a bad english but i hope you understood me :)

i think arial wouldn’t be that great, since it’s just a crippled version of helvetica - why not use the better version instead?
also your logo doesn’t use a arial black, more likely a normal arial in bold ;)

  14. 14 by .malte | Feb 22nd, 2006 at 6:07 pm

    ups
lol i used arial black and know arial bold i think, hmm sry^^

  15. 15 by .malte | Feb 23rd, 2006 at 8:09 pm

    no, its helevetica lol^^

  16. 16 by pixelroom | Feb 23rd, 2006 at 11:12 pm

Sorry, but I think you are not right. You use Helvetica bold for “Spread”, Helvetica Regular for “shirt” and for the “You think it. We print it.” Slogan the Arial. (fyi)

  17. 17 by .malte | Feb 24th, 2006 at 8:11 am

ya ya its right but not real inportant.
We discussed about the logo font, and i think a standart font would make it.
    Maybe with bold or bold/regular…
or with little effekts, that what logos are about: serious but with a good idea that makes them interesting!

    (hope you understand me…. :) )

errmm … I am not quite sure about this “discussion”. Typography is one of the, if not THE most important thing about a logo. “standard” fonts like verdana or arial express total ignorance and hobby-like logos. I think 99% of all submissions here suffer from the use of “standard” fonts, or totally inappropriate fonts. Graphic Designers see at a first glance, that most of these fonts are some kind of free fonts, included on most home PCs or corel draw packages. I dont know if anyone at spreadshirt is really concerned about typography, if not, someone that is should be consulted to make a good choice for the typography of the new logo …

  19. 19 by oifabio | Feb 24th, 2006 at 11:17 am

    I am with alectronix!

It is not a matter of saying wich are the best fonts for the spreadlogo but putting someone capable to analyse the readable and appropriate fonts suggested in each logo and just rip off the others.
Unless some logo submission has a so great icon that it cannot be desconsidered. Them it would be a matter of chose this submissions and make the changes that are necessary to its typography to make it works.

I used Helvetica Neue (light) in my entry
    http://olp.spreadshirt.net/wordpress/index.php?p=1394

the idea works with different fonts, but this type gives
    the requested international touch.

It’s really interesting to see so many different approaches in one contest.
Somewhere on the site was mentioned that the logo should also work
as favicon. I disagree with that, a style element ok, but a label/logo needs more than 32×32 pixels to make it remarkable.

    hey,
of course, it is not worth having a discussion about which font could be the one and only spreadshirt font. designing a logo is a complex task with a lot of decisions, including the long process of finding the right font for your design.

so, i thought it might be a bit more constructive if i write about my reasons for the one i used in my submission:

even though it is quite a common and widely used font, i thought that helvetica black is the right one for me, and believe me, i considered it quite a few times.

i think that word ’spreadshirt’ is a long name with its 11 letters. it is not ‘nike’, ‘puma’ or ‘ibm’, not even ‘adidas’. so i thought i should use a readable, nice and simple font instead of a custom designed font, and tried to put a little extra something in it.

i think this helps the logo to become as simple as i wanted. in this way the text logo without the graphics can function well, and also has a uniqe touch. (something like .malte writes in comment #17)

i used capitals letters to keep it more compact (same height everywhere) and a tight kerning, which besides other reasons also made it possible to do the little play with the letter ‘i’.

i chose the heavy version of helvetica, because i thought it fits spreadshirt’s atmosphere rather than regular or light. it makes the logo strong and massive which is balanced with the cheerful mood of the graphics.

and finally, i think helvetica is a timeless and beautiful piece of design, and yes, it might be considered as fashion these days, but who cares? there are a million other fashions around. helvetica will look good in 3006, too.

sorry if this was long and boring, but i think that this discussion could be more interesting if others would also share their thoughts and reasons behind their designs.

    what do you think?
    cheers
